Description Cumberland is a fine, new climbing rose of moderate growth, ideal for small spaces. Its rich shade of blood red Cumberland: This exciting newcomer for 2011 is a manageable size for trellis and small spaces, and has large flowers. The flowers are a rich, deep crimson, filled with a swirl of petals. It adds lustre and tone to the garden over a long period, as flowering repeats, usually between early summer and the cold season in late September.
The individual flowers are composed of a ruffle of petals in the style of Old Garden Roses, a form that echoes the charm and grace of Victorian gardens. The flowers are produced in small clusters, giving an effective and colourful display.
Growth habit is medium, the stiffish branches are ideal for training against flat supports such as trellis, walls and fences. Training is rather straightforward, the first branches can be formed into a 'V', and in subsequent years the rose will naturally fill in the space with a network of growth that covers the support.
Foliage is at first purplish, maturing to dark, glossy green. The leaves are plentiful, leathery and heavily serrated. Cumberland is tolerant of diseases but as with all roses, periodic treatment to protect against fungi is advised.
