There are some good reasons to grow dear old Ena Harkness (introduced 1946). The colour is still a very good red, but it will fade with a blue tinge in hot sunshine (unlike modern varieties like Carris). The perfume is evocative of all good things, nothing short of a joy. The flower hangs down, the plant is sparse and disease resistance is low. As one of the quintessential roses of the late 20th Century it still has a place. Use in beds or borders.
