Bare Root Planting Window – There’s Still Time to Grow!

The Clock is Ticking: Bare Root Roses Planting Ends Soon, Don’t Miss Out

For rose gardeners, there’s a special magic in planting bare root roses. If you’re yet to start or thinking you’ve missed the window, don’t fret – there’s still time to bring these beauties to life in your garden.

Whether you’re a seasoned rosarian or a passionate novice, bare root roses are a brilliant way to grow with confidence and success. Here’s why this planting method remains a favourite among rose enthusiasts.

The bare root planting season begins as autumn sets in, usually from November, and runs right through to late March or early April.

Why this time frame? Well, roses are dormant during the colder months, making it the ideal time for transplanting. As the ground warms in spring, the roots start to establish themselves, giving your roses a head start before the growing season takes off. If your ground is workable – not frozen or waterlogged – you’re still in the game!

The Benefits of Bare Root Roses

Bare root roses have long been treasured by gardeners. They offer numerous benefits, including affordability, ease of handling, and faster establishment.

Without the weight and packaging of pots and soil, bare root roses are cost-effective. You get more rose for your money, making it easier to expand your collection.

Soak the Roots: Before planting, soak the roots in water for a few hours to hydrate them. If they look a little dry from transit, this will help revive them.

Prepare the Ground: Dig a hole wide enough to comfortably spread out the roots. Mix in well-rotted compost or manure to enrich the soil.

Plant with Care: Position the rose so the graft union, where the stems meet the roots, is just above soil level. Spread the roots out and backfill gently, firming the soil around the plant.

Water Well: Give your new rose a thorough watering to settle the soil and remove any air pockets.

Mulch: Add a layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
