How do I care for roses?

Roses are far easier to care for than many gardeners expect. They thrive best in a sunny position with at least a few hours of direct light each day, in fertile, well-drained soil. Water well in dry spells, especially through their first season while they establish, and feed regularly during the growing season to keep plants strong, healthy, and coated in flowers. Deadheading faded blooms helps encourage repeat flowering varieties to keep producing, while an annual prune keeps plants shapely and productive. It also pays to keep an eye out for common issues such as black spot, aphids, or mildew so they can be tackled early.

How is rose black spot spread?

Rose black spot spreads mainly through fungal spores. These spores travel in water, so rain splashing from leaf to leaf is one of the most common ways it moves through a plant and around the garden. Spores can also spread on the wind, on contaminated tools, or from infected leaves left lying on the soil. Once conditions turn mild and damp, black spot can spread quickly, especially if roses are crowded and air cannot move freely around the foliage.

How do I treat black spot on roses?

The best way to treat black spot is to act quickly. Remove any infected leaves from the plant and pick up any that have fallen to the ground, as these can continue to harbour spores. Do not compost them if infection is severe. Prune lightly if needed to improve airflow through the plant, and water at the base rather than over the foliage. A rose treatment designed for black spot can be used if the problem is persistent, but good garden hygiene is just as important as any spray. Feeding roses properly also helps them grow strongly and recover faster.

How should I use mycorrhizal fungi?

Mycorrhizal fungi is very easy to use and can make a real difference when planting. This should be applied directly to the roots so the fungi can make contact straight away. When planting roses, shrubs, trees, or perennials, simply sprinkle the fungi into the planting hole or dust it onto the rootball before backfilling with soil. Water in well afterwards. This is most useful at planting time, as that is when the root system is establishing and can benefit most from the fungal partnership.

Does mycorrhizal fungi expire?

Yes, mycorrhizal fungi does have a shelf life. They are a living product, so they gradually lose effectiveness over time. The packaging usually includes a best before date, and that is always worth checking before use. To keep the product in the best condition possible, store it somewhere cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight. If it is badly out of date, it may not deliver the full benefit, even if it still looks fine.

How often should I fertilise roses?

Roses benefit from regular feeding through the growing season. In most gardens, one good feed in early spring as growth starts is essential, followed by another feed in early summer to support repeat flowering and strong performance. Some gardeners also give container roses lighter, more frequent feeds because nutrients wash out of pots more quickly. The exact frequency depends on the product being used, so it is always best to follow the instructions on the pack, but in general roses are hungry plants and reward consistent feeding.

Mulch is simply a layer of material spread over the surface of the soil around plants. It can be organic, such as compost, well-rotted manure, bark, or leaf mould, and it is used to improve growing conditions. Mulch helps the soil hold moisture, suppresses weeds, protects roots from temperature extremes, and slowly improves soil structure as it breaks down. Around roses, mulch is especially valuable because it helps plants grow steadily and reduces stress in hot or dry weather.

When is the best time to mulch roses?

The best time to mulch roses is usually in spring, once the soil has started to warm up and ideally after feeding. This helps lock in moisture and gives plants a strong start to the growing season. Many gardeners also mulch in late autumn or winter with well-rotted organic matter to help enrich the soil and protect the root area. Whenever mulch is applied, it should be spread around the base of the plant but kept clear of the stems to avoid creating overly damp conditions right against the plant.
