How do I plant bare root roses?

Start by choosing a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil, as roses perform best with at least six hours of sun a day. Before planting, soak the roots in a bucket of water for a few hours to rehydrate them. Dig a good sized hole wide enough to spread the roots out comfortably, then mix in some well-rotted organic matter if your soil needs improving. Position the rose so the graft, which is the swollen join near the base of the stems, sits just below soil level in colder parts of the UK or level with the soil in milder areas. Backfill carefully, firm the soil around the roots, and water thoroughly. A mulch around the base helps retain moisture and gives the plant a strong start.

When should I plant bare root roses?

Bare root roses are best planted during the dormant season, which usually runs from late autumn through to early spring. The ideal window is typically from November to March, but do not plant if ground conditions are frozen or waterlogged. Planting during this time of year allows the roots to settle into the soil before spring growth begins. Many gardeners plant in winter so the roses have time to establish early and often perform strongly once the warmer weather arrives.

How can I grow bare root roses?

Bare root roses are grown in much the same way as other roses, but the first few months are all about establishment. Keep the soil evenly moist after planting, especially during dry spells in spring and summer. Feed in spring with a quality rose fertiliser, such as our Ultimate Rose 'Bloom-Booster' Complete Fertiliser, to encourage strong leafy growth and plenty of buds. Deadhead spent flowers through the season to keep repeat-flowering varieties performing well, and prune annually to maintain shape and vigour. A sunny position, decent airflow, regular feeding, and consistent watering in dry weather are the real keys to success. Once established, bare root roses are reliable, rewarding, and capable of producing years of colour and scent.

Are bare root roses better?

Planting bare root roses has both advantages and disadvantages when compared to planting a potted rose. They are often more economical than potted roses, there is usually a wider choice of varieties available in the bare root season, and they establish extremely well when planted at the right time of year. Because they are planted while dormant, they put their energy straight into root development and fresh spring growth. Potted roses do have the advantage of being plantable over a longer season, but bare root roses are a superb option for gardeners who want value and strong garden performance.

How long does it take for a bare root rose to flower?

A bare root rose can often flower in its first season after planting, especially if planted in winter or early spring. Some varieties will produce blooms by summer, while others may take a little longer to build strength before giving their best display later in the season. The exact timing depends on the variety, planting time, weather, and how well the plant establishes. While there may be some flowers in year one, most bare root roses really come into their own from the second season onwards, when they have had more time to settle and build up.

Do you have to soak bare root roses before planting?

Yes, soaking bare root roses before planting is strongly recommended. The roots can dry out in transit or storage, so a soak of a few hours in a bucket of water helps rehydrate them before they go into the ground. It is a simple step, but it can make a real difference to how quickly the rose settles after planting. There is no need to leave them for days, though. A few hours is usually enough to freshen the roots and prepare the plant for planting.

What are common problems with bare root roses?

Most problems with bare root roses come from poor planting conditions or lack of early care rather than the roses themselves. Most common issues come from planting into frozen or waterlogged ground conditions, letting the roots dry out before planting, placing the rose too shallow or too deep, and not watering enough during dry spells after planting. In spring and summer, roses can also face familiar issues such as blackspot, aphids, mildew, or poor flowering if they are grown in too much shade or starved of nutrients. Getting the planting right from the start avoids a great many problems later on.

Are bare root roses easy to grow?

Yes, bare root roses are generally very easy to grow. In fact, they are often one of the most straightforward ways to establish roses in the garden. As long as they are planted at the right time, soaked before planting, and given a sunny spot with good soil, they usually settle in well and grow strongly. They are not fussy plants, but they do respond well to a bit of care, particularly watering during dry spells and feeding in spring. For gardeners who want great results without unnecessary fuss, bare root roses are an excellent choice.
