Should I deadhead patio roses?

Yes, it is well worth deadheading patio roses. Removing faded blooms encourages the plant to keep producing more flowers instead of putting energy into forming hips and seed. Simply snip off spent flower heads, cutting back to the first healthy leaf with five leaflets if possible. Continue to do this through the flowering season and your patio roses will usually reward the effort with repeat flushes of colour.

Why is my patio rose dying?

A patio rose usually starts to struggle because something in its growing conditions is off. The most common causes are lack of water, waterlogging, too little sun, poor feeding, a pot that has become too cramped, or disease such as black spot. If the leaves are yellowing, dropping, or the stems are going brown from the tips, check the compost first. Roses like moist but well-drained soil, not bone dry compost and not roots sitting in soggy conditions. It is also worth checking whether the plant is getting enough light, as roses weaken quickly in too much shade. If there is still green in the stems, the plant may well recover with pruning, feeding and better care.

Do patio roses need full sun?

Yes, patio roses do best in full sun. Ideally they want at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. The more sun they get, the better the flowering and the stronger the growth. They will cope with light shade, but too much shade often leads to fewer flowers, weaker stems and a greater risk of disease. A warm, bright, open position is usually the best place for them.

What is the difference between a patio rose and a bush rose?

The main difference is size and habit. A patio rose is bred to stay compact, neat and relatively small, making it ideal for pots, containers, small borders and front-of-border planting. A bush rose is generally larger, broader and more vigorous, so it suits beds and borders where it has more room to grow. Both can flower beautifully, but patio roses are really designed for smaller spaces and easier container growing.

Do patio roses come back every year?

Yes, patio roses are perennial plants, so they come back year after year. They lose leaves and go dormant in winter, then start back into growth in spring. As long as the plant is healthy and looked after properly, there is no reason a patio rose should not impress for many years. Regular feeding, pruning and watering all help keep it strong.

Do patio roses survive the winter?

Yes, most patio roses will survive typical UK winter conditions, especially if they are planted in the ground or kept in a sheltered spot. Roses are hardy, but patio roses grown in pots are a little more exposed because the roots can get colder than they would in the soil. In very severe weather, it helps to move pots to a more protected position, raise them off the cold ground if possible, and make sure the compost does not stay waterlogged. They may look bare and unimpressive in winter, but that is perfectly normal. Once spring arrives, they should start into growth again.
